Glossary: Web hosting

What is Shared Hosting?

A common type of hosting where many websites run on one server and use its resources together.

What it is

One server holds many websites, and they use its processor, memory and storage together. The server is looked after for you, which keeps the cost down and means you don't need technical skills.

Who it suits

It works well for most small business websites, blogs and brochure sites, where visitor numbers are steady and the site doesn't run complicated software.

What to look out for

Because resources are used together, a very busy website on the same server can affect others. Good hosts manage this, but it can show up as a slower site at busy times.

What to look at next

If your site is growing, or speed really matters to your business, look for hosting with fewer websites on each server. Our ProFlex Max hosting is built that way: you aren't sharing with email servers and thousands of other sites. If you need full control of your own server, look at a VPS.
