A Wildcard SSL certificate secures your main domain and all of its first-level subdomains (*.yourdomain.com) with a single certificate. That includes shop.yourdomain.com, blog.yourdomain.com, app.yourdomain.com and any others.

A Wildcard SSL covers all first-level subdomains of the domain it is issued for. It does not cover second-level subdomains (such as shop.blog.yourdomain.com) — a separate certificate would be needed for those.

Wildcard certificates are typically issued at DV or OV validation levels. EV Wildcard SSL is not widely supported by certificate authorities.

Wildcard SSL certificates cost more than single-domain certificates, but they are significantly more cost-effective than purchasing individual certificates for each subdomain you need to secure.
