Glossary: Domains

What is an IPS Tag?

A label showing which company manages a .uk domain. A .uk domain moves between companies by changing this tag.

What it is

Every company that can register .uk domains has a tag with Nominet, the registry behind .uk. It is also called a Nominet tag or registrar tag. IPS stands for Internet Provider Security. Each .uk domain, including .co.uk, is labelled with the tag of the company managing it.

How a .uk transfer works

Most domains move using an authorisation code. A .uk domain has so far worked differently: your current registrar changes its IPS tag to the tag of the new company. Host Dada's tag is HOSTDADA.

Changing the tag doesn't change your nameservers or DNS, so your website and email keep working during the move. But some registrars remove their own DNS service once a domain leaves them, so check where your DNS is hosted first.

What is changing

Nominet has announced that from 9 February 2027, .uk transfers will use a Transfer Authorisation Code instead, in the same way as .com.
