What is an EPP Code?
A password for a domain that you give the new registrar when you transfer it. Also called an auth code or transfer key.
What it is
An EPP code proves that you are allowed to move a domain to another registrar. You get it from your current registrar and enter it when you order the transfer. EPP stands for Extensible Provisioning Protocol, the system registrars use to talk to registries.
Where to find it
Look in your current registrar's control panel, usually in the domain's transfer options. You may need to unlock the domain first. If you can't find it, ask the registrar's support team.
Why a transfer can still be refused
For extensions such as .com, ICANN's rules let a registrar refuse a transfer within 60 days of the domain being registered or last transferred. Treat the code like a password, because it can be used to move your domain.
Do .uk domains use one?
Not yet. A .uk domain moves by changing its IPS tag, although Nominet has announced a move to authorisation codes on 9 February 2027.
