Glossary: DNS

What is an MX Record?

A DNS record that tells other mail servers where to deliver email for your domain.

What it is

MX stands for mail exchanger. When someone emails you, their mail server looks up your domain's MX records to find out where to send the message. Your website and email can be hosted by different companies, because they use different records.

What the priority number means

Each MX record has a priority number, and the lowest is tried first. Higher numbers act as backups. Two records with the same number share the mail.

Why email stops after a move

The most common cause is that the MX records were lost when the nameservers changed, or still point at the old provider. If you've moved and mail has stopped arriving, check these first.
