Why Choose a .shop Domain?

The .shop extension launched in 2016 after GMO Registry won the contract in one of the most expensive new gTLD auctions on record, paying over $41 million for the rights. It is purpose-built for online retail and is recognised globally as a clear signal that a website sells something. With several million registrations to date, .shop is one of the most successful new gTLDs and is unrestricted, so any merchant anywhere can register one.

Ideal for:

  • Independent online retailers and Shopify store owners
  • Direct-to-consumer brands launching a new product line
  • Bricks-and-mortar shops adding an online storefront
  • Etsy and eBay sellers building their own branded site
  • Dropshippers and print-on-demand operators

Things to know:

  • Unrestricted — anyone, anywhere can register a .shop domain.
  • Operated by GMO Registry, a Japanese company that also runs .tokyo and .nagoya.
  • Some short, generic or high-value words (e.g. shoes.shop, coffee.shop) are flagged as premium and carry higher registration and renewal fees set by the registry.
  • Standard registration terms run from 1 to 10 years.

Frequently asked questions about .shop

Anyone. The .shop registry has no eligibility restrictions, so individuals, sole traders, partnerships and limited companies anywhere in the world can register one. You do not need to prove you operate a shop or have a trading licence — the only check is that the name itself is available and not already taken.

You can register a .shop domain for between 1 and 10 years in single-year increments. Many retailers choose multi-year terms to lock in their brand and avoid the risk of forgetting to renew during a busy trading period. You can also renew at any point during the registration term.

Yes. The registry classifies certain short or commercially valuable names as premium, and these carry higher registration and renewal fees set by GMO Registry rather than the standard rate. The pricing shown in our search tool reflects the actual registry tier for the name you enter, so there are no surprises at checkout.

Yes. You will need to unlock the domain at your current registrar, request the authorisation (EPP) code, and then start the transfer with us. The process usually completes within five to seven days and adds a year to your registration. The domain must be at least 60 days old and not within 60 days of a previous transfer.

After expiry the domain enters a roughly 30-day grace period where you can still renew at the standard price. After that it moves into a 30-day redemption period with a higher recovery fee set by the registry. If you do not act, the name is released and anyone — including competitors — can register it.
