Case study: Regulated e-commerce
Plate Studio: Bringing a Complex, Regulated Purchase Online
Plate Studio needed to bring a complicated, compliance-heavy purchase online without sacrificing the customer experience or the security of sensitive customer information. We built one platform that does both.

At a glance
- Client
- Plate Studio, a UK manufacturer of custom, road-legal number plates
- The challenge
- Sell a configurable, legally regulated product online, including the identity checks the law requires
- What we built
- A live plate builder, a full online shop and a secure document and review workflow
- What we did
- Consultancy, solution design, development, hosting and ongoing support
Two problems, not one
- Helping customers see what they're buying. A custom plate means choosing a registration, size, lettering style, badge, border and fixings, and not every combination can be made. Plate Studio wanted customers to design it on screen before ordering.
- Handling sensitive documents properly. As a DVLA Registered Number Plate Supplier, Plate Studio must check a customer's identity and right to use a registration before making a road-legal plate. Documents like driving licences, passports and V5C log books should never sit in an inbox.
From a visual brief to a business application
The first conversation was about what customers would see. We then worked through what the business needed behind that: how an order moves from the website to the workshop, what has to be checked, who checks it, and what happens when a document is missing. The shop and the compliance process became one system rather than two separate jobs.
What we built
- A live plate builder. Customers see their own registration on their chosen plate, drawn to scale, with the preview and price updating as they go.
- Manufacturing rules built in. Options that can't be made simply aren't offered, so customers can't order something the workshop can't produce.
- Automatic pricing. The price follows Plate Studio's own price sheet and is recalculated on the server for every order, so it's always right.
- Private document handling. Customers upload documents against their order. The files are held in private, encrypted storage, and only Plate Studio staff can open the originals.
- Review and verification. Staff verify each document from the order screen, with a record of who checked it and when, and customers can see the status in their account.
- Payments that don't lose orders. Customers pay by card or PayPal, and a successful payment becomes a confirmed order even if they close the tab at the wrong moment.
- Built for phones. The mobile builder follows the order customers actually decide in, with the preview returning whenever a choice changes it.
Could this work for your business?
Many businesses have the same underlying problem: a product, process or legal requirement that is too complicated for an off-the-shelf website. The same patterns suit product configurators, rules-based quotes, eligibility checks, secure document submission and customer portals.
