Why Choose a .mba Domain?
The .mba extension was launched in 2015 as part of ICANN's new gTLD programme and is operated by Donuts (now Identity Digital). It speaks directly to the world of postgraduate business education, executive training, and management consultancy. Unlike many education-focused extensions, .mba is unrestricted, so business schools, alumni networks, prep services, and individual graduates can all register a name without needing to prove accreditation or institutional status.
Ideal for:
- Business schools and executive education programmes
- GMAT and admissions prep services
- MBA alumni associations and networking groups
- Management consultants and business coaches
- Career advisors and admissions consultants
Things to know:
- Unrestricted — anyone, anywhere can register, with no requirement to hold an MBA or be affiliated with a business school.
- Operated by Identity Digital (formerly Donuts), one of the largest new gTLD registry operators.
- A subset of names are classified as premium by the registry and carry higher annual fees than standard registrations.
- Standard ICANN policies apply, including the 60-day transfer lock after registration.

Frequently asked questions about .mba
Registration is open to everyone. There are no eligibility checks, accreditation requirements, or proof-of-affiliation rules. You do not need to hold an MBA, run a business school, or be employed in education to register a .mba name. Individuals, companies, and institutions worldwide can apply on a first-come, first-served basis.
You can register a .mba domain for between one and ten years in single-year increments. Renewals work the same way, so you can extend your registration at any point during the term. Many holders choose multi-year registrations to lock in continuity for prospectus pages, alumni portals, and long-running programme microsites.
Yes. The registry classifies a portion of inventory as premium, meaning short, generic, or highly desirable names carry higher registration and renewal fees than standard names. Premium status is set by the registry, not the registrar, and the elevated fee usually applies every year, not just at the first registration.
Yes. Inbound transfers are supported once the domain is at least 60 days old and not within 60 days of a previous transfer. You will need to unlock the domain at your current registrar, obtain the authorisation code, and start the transfer with us. The transfer adds one year to the existing registration term.
After expiry, the domain enters a renewal grace period of around 30 days during which you can renew at the standard fee. If still unrenewed, it moves into a 30-day redemption period where recovery is possible but incurs a registry redemption fee. After that, the name is deleted and released for general registration.
