Why Choose a .gay Domain?
Launched in 2020 by Top Level Design, .gay is the first top-level domain explicitly created for the LGBTQ+ community. It comes with a Rights Protections framework that prohibits hate speech and slurs, and the registry donates 20% of profits to LGBTQ+ non-profits including GLAAD and CenterLink. Registration is open to anyone, but the community standards mean the namespace is actively defended against malicious or homophobic use.
Ideal for:
- LGBTQ+ activists, charities and advocacy groups
- Queer-owned businesses, bars and venues
- Pride events and festival organisers
- Drag performers, artists and content creators
- Allies, family blogs and coming-out resource sites
Things to know:
- Unrestricted — anyone, anywhere can register, but registrants must agree to community guidelines that prohibit slurs and hate content.
- Operated by Top Level Design, the same registry behind .design, .ink and .wiki.
- A portion of every registration is donated to LGBTQ+ charities, so renewals directly fund advocacy work.
- Premium tier names exist and are priced higher than standard registrations.

Frequently asked questions about .gay
Anyone, anywhere can register a .gay domain — there are no nationality or community membership requirements. However, all registrants agree to the registry's Rights Protections policies, which prohibit using the domain for hate speech, slurs or content that harms the LGBTQ+ community. Reported violations can lead to suspension.
Yes. The registry, Top Level Design, donates 20% of .gay profits to LGBTQ+ non-profit organisations including GLAAD and CenterLink. Every registration and renewal contributes to that funding pool, so the domain doubles as a small ongoing donation to advocacy and community support work.
You can register a .gay domain for between one and ten years in single-year increments. You can renew at any point during your registration term, and we recommend setting auto-renewal or registering for multiple years upfront to avoid losing a name you've built a brand or community around.
Yes. You'll need the authorisation code from your current registrar and the domain must be unlocked and over 60 days old. The transfer adds a year to your registration term and we'll handle the migration. Your existing DNS records can be preserved during the move.
After expiry you enter a renewal grace period of around 30 days where you can renew at the standard price. After that, the domain moves into a redemption phase for roughly 30 days where recovery is possible but carries a significant fee. Once that ends, the name is released and anyone can register it.
